The First Moderator Election!
The First Moderator Election of WriteBrains.net begins! How do Moderators work on WriteBrains.net?On this forum, Moderators are elected for 6-month non-consecutive terms. Normally, any member with over 6 months' membership may submit their candidacy, and other members with 6 months' membership may vote. All founder members, however, automatically have this right - you'll know if you're a founder member because you'll be reading this! You can also see your membership of the 'Longstanding Member' group in your profile (and you can set this as your display group too, if you wish. Just navigate to the 'Settings' tab after clicking the 'Edit Profile' button). How do Moderator Elections work on WriteBrains.net?1. After an Election is triggered, there is one week for submission of candidacy and campaigning, which is conducted in the election thread (this one!).2. After the one week candidacy/campaigning period, a poll is established of all the candidates, and a three-day voting period begins.3. After the voting period ends, the winners of the poll are duly elected Moderators, depending on how many Moderators are up for election. For this one, we're electing three Moderators.Where can I find more detailed information about the election process and Moderator duties? The election process is codified in The Forum Code (ยง2.2.D.), as are Moderator duties. You can find the current version of The Forum Code in 'The Rules' subforum of 'The Town Hall' category, though these are subject to change during this beta test of WriteBrains.net, and may be inaccurate at the time of writing (for instance, Moderators are not to be anonymous, since this reduces their accountability and poses security risks for the forum).
How many Moderators are being elected in this Moderator Election? 3. In order to maintain moderation continuity as these first Moderator terms come to an end, however, the winner of the poll will serve 6 months, the runner-up will serve 5 months, and the third-placed finisher will serve four months.
Okay... good luck! Election begins!

Forum members,
This post declares my candidacy for Moderator through the initial term of the forum.
I believe a well-moderated online forum should result in a free and healthy exchange of ideas. It's important that members feel as "safe" as possible with the current membership and moderation staff, as well as given the autonomy to freely express their personal opinions. Forums are built for members, so it's of utmost important that members are protected from potential abuses of authority.
If elected:
- I will moderate the forum in accordance with the Forum Code to the highest level of objectivity of which I am capable of. I will not be pressured by Owners or external factions to make specific decisions, and if undue pressure occurs from the aforementioned parties, I will resign.
- I will not infringe on members' personal beliefs, whether those be political, religious, or otherwise. However, I will not tolerate racist, sexist, or anti-LGBTQIA+ remarks. Member harassment and/or personal attacks will be taken seriously and subject to the Forum Code's disciplinary system.
- I will not unnecessarily involve myself in discourse that is unreported and deemed to be in accordance with the Forum Code. However, I will take violations of the Code seriously, as I believe conscious inaction erodes trust quickly.
- Raised concerns will be considered carefully and thoughtfully, factoring in the supplied evidence, relevant context, and severity/impacts.
- If demands for public transparency arise for a given incident's judgment, I will be as transparent as possible, provided I do not believe this will result in severe emotional distress for one or more of the involved parties.
My qualifications:
- I currently serve as a technical software engineering lead for my day job, having spent years mentoring employees, setting direction, and making difficult decisions for the betterment of my organization and its members.
- I founded a racial justice Employee Resource Group at the corporation I work for, and served as a chapter chair that managed the group along with its steering committee, settled disputes/conflicts, led initiatives/events, etc. I recently applied for and was offered a leadership position to oversee all chapters of this organization, which I accepted.
- Over the years, I have been a member of many online forums with only a singular minor infraction incurred. I also moderate a Discord server for an experimental record label.
About me:
I'm a pretty chill and honest guy that cares a lot about fairness and equality. In my spare time, I enjoy writing, making music, the outdoors, and playing classic video games. I'm definitely not perfect, but my goal in life is to learn as much as I can from the world around me.
I'd encourage everyone to get to know me and ask questions before they decide whether or not to vote for me.

I agree, @arta.
In general, I think it's important for members to have expectations for moderators, and while the Forum Code is technically the documented form of these expectations, I very much would value seeing personal statements from all interested parties.

ok, what if no one votes? will that mean that this forum will have no moderation? and what would that mean? would it become victim to spamming? is that the worst case scenario? Perhaps we just need a rotating trash removal person and if you don't do your shift you loose your membership.
Next worst case scenario is assholes...couldn't we just nominate a member for banning and vote on it over a period of time then have the designated trash person ban them?
I mean....I am already sitting on the group W bench.

Another election will be immediately announced afterwards with the same process, and as many times as is necessary subsequently, until we have our minimum complement of three Moderators.

Declaration of WinnersWhile normally we would move into a three-day voting period following the one week submission of candidacy and campaigning, since monad has run unopposed, they shall be duly elected Moderator without contest. Congratulations, monad! You should now change your 'Display Group' to 'Moderator' in your Profile (under 'Edit Profile' > 'Settings'). Your duties are defined in the Forum Code, though if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask the Owners. Your term shall expire in six calendar months, on 20th September 2022 at 09:00GMT. We still need to elect two further Moderators and one Advocate to have the full complement of staff. These elections shall be run in due course, and repeated until the positions are filled.

While I can see your point of view of letting the forum decide to trash a person or not there are situations where we'd not want some personal information aired out for everyone to see. Especially if the people involved in the mediation come to a compromise and everything is worked out. There's no sense in leaving angry baggage(words on a page said in intense emotional states) laying around for everyone to go back and view. it's good to see you again Stu!

if anyone is aware of a forum that has no moderation please let me know, just curious what it would be like. 4chan might be pretty close but even they moderate some things. The goal is a mod staff that the users can elect themselves to prevent people from becoming way too enmeshed in that role. We've all come from a place with pretty arbitrary moderation and at times, really heavy handed and abusive staff. Stick around and see how this experiment goes. I've never been a part of a forum set up like this before.
